The Pixel CO2 laser is now available at Lawrenceville Plastic Surgery. The CO2 laser has always been considered the gold standard in skin resurfacing, but the prolonged healing time, redness and side effects led to a decline in its popularity.
The Pixel CO2 laser beam is split into many small pixels, creating tiny thermal channels without disturbing the surrounding tissue. With only about 20% of the treated skin actually ablated, the healing process is much quicker. The healing reaction stimulates growth of new collagen, and the redness disappears much more quickly. After several weeks of collagen regrowth, the skin is plumper and wrinkles have faded significantly.

The periorbital area probably has the greatest impact on a youthful appearance, and there are many surgical options with periorbital rejuvenation. Some patients can have a significant improvement with skin removal alone from the upper eyelids, but there is often a descent of the eyebrows as we age. Look at any photograph of model on a magazine cover, and the common denominator is an upswept tilt of the eyebrow going from the
middle of the brow outward. Makeup and eyebrow hair removal can provide some nonsurgical sleight of hand, but changing the eyebrow shape surgically is a more long-term solution.
Many of the traditional techniques involved a lengthy scar through the scalp. This led to the development of endoscopic procedures done through small incisions, but the results been disappointing due to difficulty in fixating the brow.
Dr. Smotrich employs a relatively new technique called the Modified Lateral Brow Lift, which focuses on changing the eyebrow shape rather than simply elevating the brow. The technique borrows features from both the traditional open coronal brow lift and the endoscopic techniques. At its annual meeting in early April, the New Jersey Society of Plastic Surgeons elected Dr. Smotrich its President-Elect, meaning that he will become its President next year. The Society is comprised of New Jersey plastic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and advances plastic surgery in the state through educational programs and patient advocacy.
